Every fall, I find myself constantly checking the forecast, trying to get out and see the leaves at their prime. I try to find the exact perfect weekend to drive up North, but I rarely do. Sometimes the trees are still green. Sometimes most of the leaves have already fallen. The window of peak color is impossibly narrow.

This year was no different. I thought I had it just right, but the colors don’t negotiate. They peak when they peak, and no amount of planning my calendar around them guarantees I’ll catch the perfect moment.

The funny thing is, no matter when I go (peak colors or not), I never regret the trip. The leaves are beautiful and I treasure the time spent with my family.

I think about this a lot when clients ask me about timing the market. Especially now, when conditions change frequently. Everyone always wants to know the best time to act.

When’s the right moment to make a big purchase? Should I wait for conditions to improve? What if I act too soon? I get all these questions on a regular basis.

The honest answer is that not even the most seasoned investor can tell you when is the right moment. Markets move on their own timeline, just like the leaves. In my experience, the people who spend too long waiting for perfect conditions often miss the window entirely.

One thing that never fails, however, is preparation. A retirement strategy built on consistent principles doesn’t need perfect timing to succeed. It’s designed to take advantage of opportunities when they arise and keep you on track regardless of what the market is doing.

A comfortable retirement doesn’t rely on catching the market at its peak. It comes from having a plan you can trust when conditions become unpredictable.
